American Llewellins

These setters that evolved in North America from these specific dogs became known as “American Llewellins” and represented dogs bred strictly for their field qualities.

“Rhoebe’s dam Psyche (1537 – E.K S. B.). can fairly lay claim as being the founder of the strain of English Setters bred and introduced at field trials by the late Thos. Statter. You will find that Bruce, Dan, Dick, Rap Rob, Roy, Rake, Dora, Daisey, Die, Darling, Rose and Ruby ; all field trial winners bred by Mr Statter from Rhoebe and four different sires, from this remarkable bitch but for some reason (in America only) they are dubbed Llewellins? The progeny from Rhoebe have the grand characteristics of the breed – viz., tremendous speed, combined with graceful action, intelligence and stamina. Mr James Tait, the breeder of Psyche wrote me (Thos. Johnson, Winnipeg. Manitoba) : “With reference to to the bitch Psyche, I bred her in the year 1859 and sold her in 1865 to Thos Satter, Esq.., Standhall, Manchester; having previously had three litters from her. ( 2 from Old Negro) I sold one of Pysche’s pups to the present Duke of Richmond. His Grace wrote me afterwards that it was the best he ever shot over.
“This strain has been in my possession for close on fifty years, and have been in only three hands for upwards of one hundred and fifty years ; they are great goers and full of dash and decision. Mr. Statter acknowledged that the speed and smartness of his dogs came through old Pysche, in fact what you in America term “Llewellins”, never came in prominence until crossed with mine.”
“Mr. Taits statement is eloquently corroborated in the fact that four dogs by four different sires won the Champion Cup at the Shrewbury trial four consecutive years and duplicating with five winners in the aged Setter stake. I have a puppy by Manitoba Toss down south, being broke on quail.”
Captain McMurdo writes me: — “He is a fast wide ranger, has a fine nose, and is good tempered and intelligent ;— ‘he out classes any setter I saw run last fall’– ” breed Pitti Sting to ‘Toss’ again by all means and every other bitch you have.”
This opinion from one of the most thoughtful breeders in America should receive consideration from those desiring and outcross, especially when it is a strain unexcelled from field qualilty.”
